Sumatra is the second largest island of the Republic of Indonesia. Sumatra Mandheling coffee although relatively rare is grown on the lofty volcanic slopes of Mount Leuser near the port of Padang in the Batak region of west-central Sumatra, at altitudes of 2,500 to 5,000 feet.
Coffee trees were originally brought to Indonesia in the early 19th century by the Dutch who sought to break the world-wide Arabic monopoly on the cultivation of coffee. Within a few years, Indonesian coffee dominated the world's coffee market. Yet by the end of the century disease completely destroyed the crop. Coffee trees were successfully replanted and quickly gained a large share of the world market until the plantations were ravaged again during World War II.
The natural drying method used in its production results in a very full body with a concentrated flavor, garnished with herbal nuances and a spicy finish. The coffee has a low acidity and a richness that lingers on the back corners on your tongue. Notes of chocolate are evident in the finish.
Our main suppliers of FTO Sumatra, KSU Adil Wiladah Mabrur and Koperasi Gayo Mandiri, have used Fair Trade premiums to purchase agricultural tools (weed cutters, machetes, shovels and saws), and invest in environmental education and training (erosion, soil conservation and disposal of waste). Programs focusing on women's empowerment are also prevalent, such as supporting women during their pregnancy by purchasing necessary medical tools. They have also made an effort to hire women to do manufacturing work in processing facilities as well as training in financial management.

Please note we roast Tuesday, Wednesdays and sometimes on thursdays so can not always dispatch orders on the day of order. If you require urgent delivery please contact us at email@example.com before ordering.
Roasted coffee orders placed with next day delivery after 07:30 am GMT will not be processed until the following working day. We will process and ship any orders received before 07:30. Our website calculates shipping charges based on the items wieght you're ordering and your delivery address, it will offer you the best available rates once it knows this information. The easiest way to work out shipping costs is to go through the website ordering process as if you were going to order the items you would like, then on the final page of the checkout process (before having to pay) you'll be given a list of available shipping options.
Why are we asking you for a telephone number?
It is for the delivery company to contact you in case of any difficulties they have with your delivery, if you do not provide us with a telephone number and there are any issues with the delivery of your order the delivery company will not be able to contact you. If you are having your order shipped via DHL and you provide us with your mobile number they will send you updates via text message but we can set this to an email if not appropriate.
Once you receive your shipping confirmation email your order is on its way to you. At this stage we've roasted, bagged, picked, packed and dispatched your order then put it in the hands of your chosen courier.
It always makes us very happy when things run like clockwork but on occasion due to circumstances outside of our control your order may take a little longer to get to you than expected, please remember this is usually down to the courier. Royal Mail will not class an item as lost or missing for 15 working days but we always ask that you wait for 7, unfortunately we can not take action until this time has passed. During this time we recommend that you ask your local sorting office if they've already tried to deliver (even if they haven't left a card) and ask your neighbours if your order has been left with them. You should also check that the delivery address you gave us is correct, this can be found on your shipping confirmation email.
If your delivery still hasn't arrived after 7 days and you have performed the above steps then please email us at firstname.lastname@example.org with your order number attched. We realise this can be a very frustrating situation we do greatly appreciate your patience while your order makes its way to you.
