Cold brew has become one of those coffee terms that gets thrown around a lot — but what actually makes it different, and why do we make it here at Frazer's?
What Is Cold Brew?
Cold brew is coffee brewed slowly in cold or room-temperature water, typically over 12–24 hours. Unlike iced coffee (which is just hot coffee poured over ice), cold brew is never exposed to heat at any point in the process. That single difference changes everything about the final cup.
Why It Tastes So Good
Heat extracts compounds from coffee quickly — but it also pulls out bitter, acidic notes. Cold water extracts more slowly and selectively, drawing out the sweeter, smoother flavours while leaving much of the acidity and bitterness behind. The result is a naturally sweet, velvety concentrate that's easy to drink and incredibly refreshing.
If you've ever found hot coffee a little harsh on your stomach, cold brew is often a gentler option — its lower acidity makes it easier to digest for many people.
Why We Make It
At Frazer's, we're passionate about showcasing what great coffee can taste like when you give it time and care. Cold brew is the perfect expression of that philosophy — it rewards patience with a cup that's clean, complex, and deeply satisfying.
We also love that cold brew opens coffee up to people who might not usually reach for it. It's approachable, versatile (great over ice, with milk, or even in cocktails), and a brilliant way to experience the character of a single-origin bean without any heat interference.
How to Make It at Home
You don't need any special equipment — just good coffee, cold water, and time.
- Use a coarse grind and a ratio of around 1:8 coffee to water (e.g. 100g coffee to 800ml water)
- Combine in a jar or jug, stir well, and cover
- Leave in the fridge for 12–24 hours
- Strain through a fine mesh sieve or coffee filter
- Serve over ice and dilute to taste
For the best results, start with a medium or light roast — the natural fruit and sweetness notes shine beautifully in cold brew.
